What Documents Do I Need to Rent a Luxury Car in Spain?

A complete checklist of every document required to rent a Ferrari, Lamborghini or Rolls-Royce in Spain — driving licence rules for US, UK and EU drivers, International Driving Permit, deposits and more.

You've found the car. You've picked the dates. Now the practical question: what do you actually need to bring to rent a luxury car in Spain? Unlike a standard car rental where any driving licence usually does the job, luxury car hire has a few additional requirements that catch people off guard. This guide covers every document you need — whether you're flying in from the US, UK, Germany or Australia.

The Complete Document Checklist for Luxury Car Rental in Spain

When our team delivers the car to your hotel, we'll verify the following documents before handing over the keys. Having everything ready saves time and ensures the handover goes smoothly.

1. Original Driving Licence — Physical Card Only

Your driving licence must be the original physical card. No photos on your phone, no photocopies, no digital wallet versions. Most countries now issue a credit-card format licence — that's what we need to see. The older paper-and-counterpart format (still common with older UK licences) is accepted if both parts are present.

Minimum licence duration: Your licence must have been issued at least 3 years before the rental date. We check the issue date on the card. If you renewed your licence recently and the card shows a recent date, keep any documentation showing your original test pass date — this can avoid complications.

2. International Driving Permit (IDP) — Required for Non-EU Drivers

If your driving licence was issued outside the European Union or European Economic Area, you need an International Driving Permit alongside your national licence. The IDP is a multilingual translation of your national licence, issued by an authorised motoring organisation in your home country.

Where to get your IDP:

Important: The IDP is only valid alongside your national licence — not as a standalone document. Both must be presented together. The IDP cannot be issued in Spain or any country other than your home country.

3. Passport or National ID Card

We verify your identity against your driving licence. For EU citizens, a national ID card is sufficient. For all other nationalities, your passport is required. Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay in Spain.

4. Credit Card in the Driver's Name

The security deposit (pre-authorisation, not a charge) is held on a credit card. The card must be:

The deposit is a pre-authorisation hold — the money stays in your account but appears as unavailable until we release it at the end of the rental. Release typically takes 3–7 business days depending on your bank.

Deposit amounts by vehicle:

5. Proof of Accommodation (Recommended)

Not strictly required, but having your hotel confirmation or villa rental address available speeds up the delivery paperwork. We confirm the delivery address when you book — having the exact address or hotel name ready at handover time is helpful.

Special Cases: Country-by-Country Licence Guide

UK Driving Licences Post-Brexit

UK licences (both the current pink photocard and the older green paper format) are fully valid in Spain for tourist visits. Brexit has not changed the recognition of UK licences for short-term rental purposes. UK drivers do not need an IDP for Spain — the UK/Spain bilateral recognition agreement remains in force for visitors. Only residents of Spain who hold UK licences and plan to drive long-term need to consider exchanging their licence.

US Drivers — The Most Common Complication

US drivers are the group most likely to arrive without an IDP. Many US tourists assume their American driving licence is sufficient everywhere — in many countries it is, but for luxury car rental in Spain specifically, we require the IDP alongside the US state licence. If you arrive without an IDP, the rental cannot proceed. There is no workaround and no IDP can be issued in Spain.

Get your IDP from AAA before you travel. It takes minutes in-branch and costs $20. This is the single most important preparation step for American visitors renting high-end cars in Spain.

Australian, New Zealand and Canadian Drivers

Same situation as US drivers — IDP required. Australian licences are increasingly in digital format; the physical card is still required for the rental (digital wallet versions are not accepted). The IDP must be the physical paper document issued by your national motoring association.

Chinese and Asian Drivers

Chinese driving licences are not recognised in Spain — a Chinese licence alone does not permit driving in Spain regardless of any other documentation. You need a valid IDP issued in China (through the China Automobile Federation) alongside a Chinese national licence, which together create a valid driving credential in Spain. Alternatively, if you hold a driving licence from another country (Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea), different rules may apply — contact us to confirm.

Age Requirements by Vehicle

Documents are necessary but not sufficient — you also need to meet the age minimum for your chosen model:

Minimum driving experience of 3 years is required for all models regardless of age.

What Happens at the Document Check

When our team delivers the car to your hotel or address, the handover typically takes 20–30 minutes and includes:

  1. Document verification: Licence, ID/passport, credit card — all originals checked
  2. Deposit pre-authorisation: Card is presented to the terminal, hold placed
  3. Vehicle walkthrough: We go around the car together noting any existing marks (photographed and logged)
  4. Controls briefing: Driving modes, start procedure, parking sensors, roof operation (for convertibles), fuel type
  5. Contract signing: Rental agreement signed by the primary driver
  6. Keys handover: You're free to go

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my partner also drive the car?

Yes — additional drivers must be registered before the rental starts. Each additional driver must present their driving licence (and IDP if applicable) at the handover and meet the same age and experience requirements as the primary driver. There is no additional charge for extra drivers.

What if I lost my IDP — can I rent without it?

No. The IDP is a legal requirement for non-EU drivers and cannot be waived. If you lose it during your trip and need to rent again, you'd need to obtain a replacement from your home country's motoring association remotely, which is generally not practical during a holiday.

Do I need special insurance documents?

No. Our insurance is comprehensive and valid for all drivers listed on the rental agreement. You don't need to present any personal travel insurance documents or additional coverage.

Can I pay the deposit in cash?

No. The security deposit must be held on a credit card in the primary driver's name. Cash deposits are not accepted for any vehicle in our fleet.

Is a digital driving licence accepted?

No — the physical driving licence card is required. This applies equally to US REAL ID digital licences, UK digital wallet licences, and any other digital format. The physical card must be present at the handover.
